Hey Optimus Prime (nice name btw!),
Everyone has their own way of learning and growing, but here are some suggestions:
- Read every day. Read about everything you’re interested about. Read the great books of the past written by great people. Read autobiographies about great writers and study what they did to get to where they were. Read blog posts of successful writers online and see how they structure their content, what kind of voice they have, what kind of persona they create for themselves, etc. This will help you try out different voices and styles when you start writing and attempt to grow an audience. The key similarity/habit that many successful people have is their passion for reading and learning. Reading helps you train your eye so you know what great prose looks like (usually published books are heavily edited and proofread countless times, so you can be sure that most books you read follow proper grammatical rules). Reading helps expand your mind, see the world differently, and think bigger and more imaginatively.
- Write everyday. You can publish and keep yourself accountable or write privately and work on different styles. Write like no ones watching — which is the case since everyone starts at zero. Don’t care about what other people will think. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make your work presentable, since there obviously will be a chance for someone to see it if you publish online. But I would say when you start out, you can publish and just keep at it. You’ll be surprised at how many random people will find your stuff and will stick around to see what else you can offer.
- Experience more things in life. Do things that you’ve never done before. Break out of your comfort zone and take action. Plan something out and keep yourself accountable for a month. Then come back and report it to the rest of us. You’ll be surprised at how much you’ll have to share.
Taking action is key — you can always learn along the way. It doesn’t matter if you suck and it doesn’t matter how many times you fail or fall down in the beginning. You must be willing to be a fool in order to become a master. There is no other way. You can read as many strategies and tips on getting better at writing as you’d like, but actually DOING and TRYING is where you really learn what works and what doesn’t. Discipline and patience is key to see results. Find a community of people online or find some friends around you who are aiming toward bettering themselves. You will find the journey significantly easier if you have other people supporting you along the way. Don’t be discouraged if your efforts do not bear fruit immediately. Keep your head down and practice your craft. Focus on how you can get better each day instead of looking all the way down the road.
That’s all I got for now :) Hope you find this helpful!
