Sorry but I’m not exactly sure what the argument is here. I believe I made the mistake in generalizing the motivations of readers. I’m certainly not saying that none of us are actually not reading to learn and expand our horizons.
I think I misspoke when I said “we aren’t actually reading to learn”. I was explaining the process of how our brain is tackling the information in front of us. Horvath’s point may have been a bit over-exaggerated, but I still think it may be true that many of us participate in shallow reading or skimming just to feel that dopamine rush of feeling like we learned something new.
You’ve made some good points in this post — I’ll have to sit with them more before I can make sense of them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though Brent.
